What this calculator includes
A Level 2 charger is 240-volt EVSE. The sticker on the box is only one line. Most households also pay an electrician for a dedicated circuit — and then pay the utility every time the car plugs in.
Defaults use US 2025–2026 ballparks: portable units around $250–$700, wall-mounted stations around $400–$1,200, a simple indoor circuit around $400–$1,500, and a panel or service upgrade around $2,000–$4,500. Electricity starts at a national residential-style rate you should replace with your bill.
How the math works
- Upfront = hardware + installation.
- Grid kWh per full charge = battery kWh ÷ charge efficiency (default 90%).
- Per-charge cost = grid kWh × your $/kWh rate.
- Monthly electricity = monthly miles ÷ miles per kWh ÷ efficiency × rate.
- First-year-ish total = upfront + 12 × monthly electricity.
Optional gasoline comparison uses the same monthly miles, a miles-per- gallon stand-in, and a $/gallon price. It is a fuel-cost sketch, not a total cost of ownership model (no insurance, tires, or residual value).
