What drives an electrician’s bid
Distance from the main panel to the parking stall is usually the largest swing. A short indoor run on a 200 A panel with spare slots is a different job from a detached garage that needs trench, conduit, and a subpanel.

Simple install
Use this when an electrician can add a dedicated 40–60 A breaker, run appropriately sized conductors, and terminate a hardwired EVSE or a NEMA 14-50 receptacle. Permits and a final inspection are still normal. The National Electrical Code treats EV charging as a continuous load — your contractor should size the circuit accordingly (see DOE AFDC home-charging notes and NEC Article 625).
Panel upgrade
Use this when the existing service cannot safely add another large continuous load. A 100 A main with electric heat, a range, and a dryer is a common trigger. Upgrade pricing in this calculator is a blended ballpark for a 150–200 A panel or service change plus the charger circuit — not a quoted load calculation.
