How much does a Level 2 home charger cost?

In the US, a residential Level 2 EVSE typically runs about $250–$700 for a portable plug-in unit and $400–$1,200 for a wall-mounted station, before electrician work. Smart, higher-amperage, or weatherproof models sit at the top of those ranges.

How much does EV charger installation cost?

A simple 240 V circuit or NEMA 14-50 near the panel often lands around $400–$1,500. If the main panel needs a 150–200 A upgrade, electrician bids commonly jump to $2,000–$4,500 or more. Distance from the panel, outdoor conduit, and permits move the number.

How much does it cost to charge an EV at home?

Home charging cost is electricity rate × kWh drawn from the grid. A 75 kWh pack at $0.17/kWh and 90% charge efficiency is about $14 per full charge. Monthly bill impact equals miles driven ÷ miles per kWh ÷ efficiency × your rate.

Is this calculator a quote?

No. Level2Cost is a planning estimate. Local electrical codes, panel capacity, labor rates, and utility tariffs vary. Ask a licensed electrician and check your latest utility bill for the real ¢/kWh.

Portable vs wall-mounted — which should I buy?

A portable Level 2 unit is cheaper and can move with you if you already have (or can add) a 240 V outlet. A wall-mounted unit is tidier for a dedicated stall, often supports higher amperage, and is the usual long-term home setup. Hardware is only part of the bill — the circuit still needs to be safe and permitted.

Do I need a panel upgrade for a Level 2 charger?

Not always. Many homes with 200 A service and spare breaker space can add a 40–60 A circuit. Older 100 A panels, electric heat, or a long list of large appliances may need a service upgrade. Only a licensed electrician can load-calculate your panel.

What efficiency number should I use?

Level 2 charging typically delivers about 85%–95% of purchased kWh into the battery. The rest is lost as heat in the EVSE, onboard charger, and thermal management. This site defaults to 90%. Cold weather and charging to 100% can be worse.

Where do I find my electricity rate?

Use the supply + delivery ¢/kWh from a recent utility bill, not the generation-only line. If you are on time-of-use, pick the rate that matches when you actually charge (often overnight). EIA’s national average is only a starting point.

Does the federal 30C charger credit still apply?

The IRS Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit (30C) has specific location, date, and dollar caps. Rules change. This calculator does not subtract incentives — check IRS.gov and your state or utility rebate pages before you buy.
