US home charging · Level 2
Pricing assumptions and methodology
Last reviewed September 1, 2026. These are US planning defaults drawn from public energy references — not a contractor bid or a utility tariff.
Assumptions last updated September 1, 2026. Estimates only — local codes and utility rates vary.
How these numbers are kept current
Level2Cost reviews hardware, installation, and electricity defaults when public EIA, DOE, EPA, and IRS pages that we cite change, or when typical US residential Level 2 quotes move enough to shift a planning band. The review date above is the last editorial pass. We publish ranges and typical midpoints so you can replace them with a local electrician’s bid and the rate on your utility bill.
Figures are planning estimates only. Hardware street prices, electrician bids, permits, panel capacity, run length, and utility rates vary by address. This tool does not replace a licensed electrician or a quote from your utility.
Hardware ranges (USD)
| Type | Low | Typical | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portable / plug-in Level 2 | $250 | $450 | $700 |
| Wall-mounted Level 2 | $400 | $700 | $1,200 |
These are editorial US 2025–2026 street-price bands for residential Level 2 EVSE — not a formal market survey and not a recommendation of any brand. Commercial pedestals and networked workplace units are out of scope.
Installation ranges (USD)
| Scenario | Low | Typical | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple install | $400 | $900 | $1,500 |
| Panel / service upgrade | $2,000 | $3,200 | $4,500 |
Simple install assumes spare panel capacity and a short indoor run. Panel upgrade assumes a 150–200 A panel or service change plus the charger circuit. Permits, trenching, and long outdoor conduit can exceed the high end. Always get a licensed electrician’s load calculation.
Electricity and driving defaults
- Default residential rate: $0.17/kWh (EIA national average band; replace with your bill).
- Default charge efficiency: 90% (inside the ~84%–93% band discussed on fueleconomy.gov).
- Default pack: 75 kWh.
- Default driving: 1000 miles/month, 3.3 mi/kWh, 28 mpg gasoline stand-in, $3.25/gal.
Sample pack sizes offered in the calculator:
- 40 kWh — Compact / PHEV pack (Shorter-range BEV or larger PHEV)
- 60 kWh — Typical sedan (Common ~200–250 mile pack)
- 75 kWh — Midsize / default (Frequent US long-range sedan/crossover size)
- 82 kWh — Long-range (Larger sedan or dual-motor pack)
- 100 kWh — Large SUV / truck (Three-row SUV or light truck class)
Formulas
- Grid kWh per full charge = pack kWh ÷ efficiency
- Per-charge cost = grid kWh × rate
- Monthly kWh = monthly miles ÷ miles per kWh ÷ efficiency
- Annual electricity = monthly kWh × rate × 12
- Estimated first-year total = hardware + installation + 12 months of electricity
- Monthly gasoline = monthly miles ÷ mpg × $/gallon
